Deltec Adds Green Building Department to Continue to Promote Their Mission of Sustainable Homes
This year Deltec has added a new Green Building Department to continue to promote our mission of sustainable homes and respect for the environment. While Steve was briefly introduced in our August newsletter, we’ve asked him to write more about what he enjoys here at Deltec and in his personal life. Lela Stephens also came onboard with the "green team" at the end of the summer, and she introduces herself below. Steve Linton. I came to Deltec Homes excited to help a company that was already environmentally sound become a leader in sustainable business. Since this dynamic journey began six months ago, there hasn’t been a static moment. Yes, a few of you may have caught the "dynamic" and "static" references; I am an engineer by training and at heart. After graduating from Cornell University in 1998, I had the chance to work on the historical restoration of many churches recognizable on the Boston skyline. From there I moved to North Carolina and became a teacher of math, physics, environmental science, and everything in between. I have rounded out my lovely family this year with the birth of our second son, Asher, and in my spare time (yeah right!) I attempt to do a little woodworking, mandolin playing, rock climbing, and even playing a little ultimate frisbee. Lela Stephens. I became interested in green building while attending the University of North Carolina at Asheville for my dual degree in Natural Resources Management and Environmental Economics. While my original focus was on City Planning, I soon realized I wanted to help those interested in green building on a personal level. After college, I spent some time traveling and working on water and forest restoration projects in the developing world. I am a Western North Carolina native and avid mountain biker, so living and working in beautiful Asheville is truly where my heart is. I became a member of the Green Team in August and quickly realized that I was in the right place. My main focus here at Deltec Homes is helping clients with their green building projects. In addition to helping clients, I have also begun work on improving the sustainability of the Deltec facility. What we’ve been up to. This year Deltec set a goal to manufacture all of its homes using 100% renewable energy (see "Green Corner" article below). In addition, we have expanded the green products that we offer, commissioned a new waste reduction initiative aimed at finding new recycling markets, created a new website for customers to research their green home, and established a system for helping Deltec homeowners filter through the vast amount of green building information. And that was all in the first week! No, seriously, we have more exciting plans on the horizon: new state of the art lighting in the plant, more green product offerings such as solar hot water packages and ventilation equipment, and a new "Energy Wall" that allows for insulation R-values over 50% better than our standard wall. We look forward to another great year of promoting green building. |
